4. Những dấu hiệu chỉ sự đối lập

• but, yet (nhưng)
• however, nevertheless (tuy nhiên)
• in contrast, on the contrary (Đối lập với)
• instead (Thay vì)
• on the other hand (Mặt khác)
• still (vẫn)

Ví dụ:

Politicians have promised to improve road safety. In spite of this/Despite this, little has been achieved so far.

5. Những từ dấu hiệu chỉ kết luận hoặc tổng kết.

• after all (sau tất cả)
• at last, finally (cuối cùng)
• in brief (nói chung)
• in closing (tóm lại là)
• in conclusion (kết luận lại thì)
• on the whole (nói chung)
• to conclude (để kết luận)
• to summarize (Tóm lại)

Ví dụ:

To sum up, no evidence can be found to support the view that improved street lighting reduces reported crime.

6. Từ dấu hiệu để chỉ ví dụ

Bạn có thể dùng những cụm từ sau trước khi đưa ra ví dụ, như thế người đọc sẽ dễ dàng biết được bạn đang chuẩn bị nói tới cái gì.

• to illustrate

Ví dụ: 

With all the ingenuity involved in hiding delicacies on the body, this process automatically excludes certain foods. For example, a turkey sandwich is welcome, but the cumbersome cantaloupe is not.

• in fact (thực tế là)

• especially (đặc biệt là)

8. Những từ dấu hiệu chỉ địa điểm

• above (phía trên)
• alongside (dọc)
• beneath (ngay phía dưới)
• beyond (phía ngoài)
• farther along (xa hơn dọc theo…)
• in back (phía sau)
• in front (phía trước)
• nearby (gần)
• on top of (trên đỉnh của)
• to the left (về phía bên trái)
• to the right (về phía bên phải)
• under (phía dưới)
• upon (phía trên)

• in other words (nói cách khác)

• to repeat (để nhắc lại)

Ví dụ:

Anthropologist Geoffrey Gorer studied the few peaceful human tribes and discovered one common characteristic: sex roles were not polarized. Differences of dress and occupation were at a minimum. • until now (cho đến bây giờ)

Ví dụ:

Stress can be extremely damaging to your health. Exercise, meanwhile, can reduce its effects.
